Group Training Workshops

I work with some of the best photographers and organisations on all aspects of photographic post processing.

For a better idea of each of the Workshop's I teach, take a look below and then find an event in the diary above.

Introduction to Lightroom

Ideal for beginners to Lightroom

If you are looking for a way to organise a growing collection of images and a tool that provides powerful and intuitive editing, Adobe Lightroom is your best choice.  It’s modestly priced and easy to use but most of all, it allows you to easily manage huge collections of images with ease.  It can be used stand-alone or as a part of Adobe’s growing mobile system to allow sharing and editing on-the-run.

Despite Lightroom’s ease of use, getting started with any new program can be daunting.  So why not make it easy by joining us for a day packed full of help and advice.  We will tune your set-up ready for the thousands of pictures you will be loading and editing over the years to come.  By the end of the day you will be confidently importing images and performing a wide range of adjustments, helping you make the very best of your images.

Agenda

We aim to cover the following topics during the day but additions and alterations can be agreed by consensus on the day.

  • Introduction to Lightroom, how it works and why it’s different from other editors

  • Creating and understanding the catalogue

  • Importing your images and selecting the right options

  • Organising and finding your images

  • Lots of editing, including global and local adjustments, blemish fixing and B&W

  • Exporting high quality images

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for beginners and self-taught intermediates wanting to gain deeper insight into the fundamentals.  You will be working on sample images, or your own if you prefer, in a small group, with plenty of ‘hand holding’ with one of the best teachers in the business.

This 1-day workshop will help you use your valuable time better.  Give yourself the focused time you need to get to grips with the basics and gain confidence with your computer.

Intermediate Lightroom

Ideal follow-on from Introduction. Jump-in if you already use collections, smart collections and keywords

If you have been using Lightroom for a while but you’re not sure you’re getting the most from the software or you have attended my introduction course, then this course is for you!  Lightroom is a spectacularly powerful package that can transform the speed and ease of managing and editing your images.  However, to get to that level takes a little bit of work.  So why not make that step easy by joining a small group of like-minded photographers to sort out any worries and build deeper knowledge, confidence and understanding.  We will help you to discover Lightroom’s full capability.  We will speed up everything you do so you can spend less time in front of the computer and more time out on location.

Agenda:

While we aim to cover the following topics during the day, the intermediate group often deviates!  We usually cover everything below, but if we don’t, the workbook has detailed help on all the subjects and more.

  • Quick review of catalogue locations, image locations and backup

  • Re-organising your images and collections to allow for growth

  • Working with more than one computer and travelling with Lightroom

  • Screen calibrating and setup advice

  • How to quickly review and select from lots of images

  • Quick review of Collections and Smart Collections - automate your filing

  • A detailed look at localised adjustments and fixing problems

  • Adjusting Detail & Lens correction

  • Advanced sharpening

  • Automated import using Develop pre-sets

  • Synchronising edits

  • The Lightroom Print module

  • Printer calibration

  • Exporting

Who Should Attend

This workshop is ideal for those who have used Lightroom before but are not sure they are using it properly or fully.  This workshop is ideal as a follow-on from the introduction course. You will be working on sample images or your own if you prefer, on you own computer, in a small group, with plenty of ‘hand holding’ with one of the best teachers in the business.

You will receive a detailed printed workbook so you don’t have to write anything down but it is also a great place to take extra notes.

Give yourself the focused time you need to move your Lightroom skills to the next level.

Advanced Lightroom

Follow-on from Lightroom Intermediate

This module is idea for anyone who has attended my intermediate Lightroom module in the past or have been using Lightroom for some time and want to delve deeper.  We will drill deep into the system, organising, editing, printing and use with Lightroom CC.  If you have issues or questions about how to achieve professional results in Lightroom, this is the module for you.

Agenda:

While we aim to cover the following topics during the day, I fully expect to cover individual and group needs as they arise.  The supplied support materials will cover the topics below even if we do go way of piste.

  • Working with multiple computers, off-line storage and web drives

  • Re-organising file systems

  • Backing up and synchronising

  • Using Lightroom CC with Lightroom Classic

  • A closer look at Metadata

  • Histogram informed editing

  • Using Reference editing mode

  • Lens correction panel details

  • Detailed local editing, ideas and problems

  • Colour casts and toning

  • The many uses of the Tone curve

  • HSL applications for Landscapes

  • Clarity and Dehaze tips and tricks

  • Sharpening, Noise and Grain

  • Soft proofing

  • Printing – editing for print and creating a set of user templates

Who Should Attend

This workshop is ideal for those who have used Lightroom for a while to a reasonable standard but are not sure they are using it fully.  This workshop is ideal as a follow-on from my intermediate course. You will be working on your own images, or sample images, on you own computer, in a small group, with plenty of ‘hand holding’ with one of the best teachers in the business.

You will receive detailed support material so you don’t have to write anything. You will also be given all the sample images we will be using on the day so you don’t need to bring any yourself.

Introduction to Photoshop / Lightroom Next Steps

Suitable for users of Lightroom, Afinity, Capture One etc

Tools such as Lightroom and Capture One excel at organisation, batch processing and intuitive editing.  However, Photoshop allows un-rivalled image editing at a much deeper level and is the tool of choice for many professional photographers.  Fortunately, it is possible to integrate Photoshop into your existing editor/librarian workflow.  Photoshop used to be prohibitively expensive, now the Adobe Photography monthly subscription provides cost effective access to both, so why not get your money’s worth!

Join me on this workshop as an introduction to using Photoshop’s editing power and look at some of the reasons why Photoshop is still used today by professional photographers for retouching their images.

Agenda

  • The difference between RAW editors and Photoshop

  • Configuring Lightroom's settings for Photoshop

  • Finding your way around Photoshop, the panels, tools and workspaces

  • Using layers for non-destructive editing

  • The power of selections and local adjustments

  • Sharpening without halos and other sharpening tools

  • Fun with filters

  • Content aware tricks: crop, fill and move

  • Focus Stacking

Who Should Attend and what to bring

This workshop is ideal for anyone wanting to extend their post processing skills.  An ideal follow-on from my Lightroom and Capture One workshops.

You need to bring:

  • Your computer (PC or Mac)

  • You will need your editor (LightroomClassicCC, Capture One etc) and PhotoshopCC installed

  • Example images will be provided, by all means bring some of your own to work on too

Intermediate Photoshop

Follow-on from Introduction to Photoshop

Photoshop is a huge and complicated piece of software with an intimidating user interface. If you have managed to get to grips with the basics and can make simple adjustments using layers, then this one-day workshop will quickly help you understand more sophisticated editing and manipulating techniques.

Agenda

We will dive into round-trip editing using Lightroom and check your use of layers and selections to make sure you are secure before showing how to exploit them much further. We will discover more selection and refinement techniques and use these to create ever more capable masks for our editing.

Layer blending modes provide another way to work on our images and we will take a look at the most popular of the 27 available.  We will also look at image manipulations and composites that are relevant to landscape photography.

Once we have edited some images, we will discover how to enhance their presentation using text and borders.  Finally, we will look at how to quickly apply complex adjustments using actions.

This one-day workshop will help you build confidence and add new skills to your Photoshop workflow.  As always, we will try and include as many individual issues and interests as possible!

Who Should Attend?

  1. This workshop is aimed at Photoshop users who have struggled to go beyond fairly basic editing with some use of layers.  If you have not used layers, consider attending my "Introduction to Photoshop" or “Lightroom Next Steps” workshop before this one.

  2. This workshop is designed as a follow on from my "Introduction to Photoshop", “Lightroom Next Steps” or “Photoshop for Lightroom users” workshops.

What to bring

  • Laptop with PhotoshopCC installed

  • Your editor of choice, I will be using Lightroom Classic CC to pass images into Photoshop, but you could simply open images with PhotoshopCC.

Build a Photographic Website

Build a complete photographic web-site in 1-day. This is not an image gallery but a full website with no on-going costs. Ideal for complete beginners.

Many image editors include website creators but they are generally limited and difficult to maintain. Using a dedicated website builder is the best way to make a flexible site and one that is easy to maintain.

This one-day workshop is based on Wix, an easy to use, free on-line website builder that is great for photo websites.  By the end of the day, you will have created a unique website full of your own images with no on-going cost!

Agenda

  • A brief look at the different ways you can publish a website including the features built into Photoshop Elements, PhotoshopCC and Lightroom

  • Review of image quality and options to protect your images online

  • How websites are hosted and what they typically cost

  • A quick review of web builder applications

  • Introduction to Wix, creating an account and logging-in

  • Selecting a starting template

  • Customisation

  • Features aimed at photographers

  • Embellishing your site and adding extra pages

  • Publishing your site

  • Buying a custom domain

  • A look at some extra features you can add and their costs

Who Should Attend and what to bring

You need to bring:

  • A computer (PC or Mac, sorry an ipad is not suitable)

  • I recommend a mouse for those who struggle with trackpads

  • A collection of images ready to publish - say 20-50 images

I suggest you export images with the following settings so that your site runs quickly:

Image Format: jpg

Colour Space: sRGB

Limit File Size: 1000k

Resize to fit: Long Edge, 1000 pixels

Resolution: 150 ppi

Digital Black & White Developing & Printing

1-Day Workshop

Perhaps, because Black & White images are inherently manipulations, they encourage creativity in a way that colour often doesn’t.  We feel more at ease pushing the boundaries and the viewer expects monochrome images to be “artistic”.

This workshop is totally focused on creating high impact Black & White images.  We will look at various ways to use Lightroom, Photoshop and Google/Nik tools to convert and develop your images.

There will be lots of examples showing good and bad practice and examples of different paper types.  In the afternoon you will work on your own images, developing them with lots of help.  We will then select suitable papers and turn our attention to printing. You will learn the key issues necessary to achieve high quality prints every time. We will have an Epson professional printer on hand and everyone will be able to print A3 images to take away.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is ideal if you are looking to start printing at home, have been struggling to print successfully or have problems when you send your images away for printing.  If you don't have a printer and just want to make some high quality prints then why not join us and see what the fuss is about.

Who Should Attend and what to bring

This workshop is ideal for those wanting to explore the wonderful world of Black & White and learn how to select, develop and print their own images. Some experience of Lightroom and Photoshop is needed.  This workshop would not suit an absolute beginner.

You will need to bring:

  • Your computer (PC or Mac – sorry no iPad’s!)

  • You will need LightroomClassic or Photoshop, also, download the free Google/Nik collection

  • Some images to work with. Some examples are also provided for the demonstrations

Printing Workshop

2-Day Workshop

Printing is the final step in the photographic process.  Many people believe it to be the most satisfying step.  There is nothing more powerful than holding a print made on a heavy weight art paper.  Fortunately, printing is seeing something of a renaissance, so why not join us for an immersive, hands-on workshop and take home something to be proud of.

This 2-day workshop is structured to allow you plenty of editing and printing time.  Day 1 will include theory with lots of examples, you will print a few images.  Day 2 will allow a reflection on the images printed on day 1.  From here we will be intensively editing and printing on a range of fine-art papers, with lots of hand-holding and examples.  Finally we will look at some print finishing methods and examples.

The theory will cover the key editing and printing issues relating to producing high quality prints.  We will look at editing and printing techniques primarily using Lightroom and Photoshop but if you use Capture One, Afinity, Luminar or other editors, no problem.  There will be lots of examples showing good and bad practice and examples of different paper types.  You will work on your own images, developing them with my help.  We will then select suitable papers and turn our attention to printing. You will learn the key issues necessary to achieve high quality prints every time.  We will be using a professional pigment ink printer and a range of high quality papers and you will be able to take away your A3 prints.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is ideal if you are looking to start printing at home, have been struggling to print successfully or have problems when you send your images away for printing.  If you don't have a printer and just want to make some high quality prints then why not join us and see what the fuss is all about.

Black & White Photography in the City

Shoot, Edit and Print B&W images in London with Adrian Beasley and Paul Saunders

Join Adrian and Paul as we learn to shoot B&W on a photo walk through Borough Market and down to the Thames, taking in the Shard and City Hall.  There is plenty of variety on offer, from classic street portraits to modern buildings.  The light will vary from indoor shafts to outdoor reflections off glass and steel.

We return to our base, via the food sellers of Borough Market!  The afternoon is packed with advice about developing and printing your images in B&W.  Your editing will be supported by Adrian and Paul and you will take home several A3 prints made on a high quality pigment printer using fine-art papers.  The workshop is backed-up by a comprehensive workbook covering all the topics discussed and more.
