Capture to Print

Sold Out

If you have ever wanted to try Astro photography but worry about all the techniques needed to capture, process and print your images, this workshop is for you! We have bought together all the elements needed to master and enjoy this genre of photography.

We will be based on the North Devon coast around the spectacular Hartland peninsula, where we will combine Sunset, Astro and Star-trail photography over two nights in two locations. In addition, you will be able to process your images from the first day and produce several A3 prints on Fine Art papers to take away. Using the results of day one will help you improve your results for our second night of shooting.

The landscape around Hartland Quay and south to Bude is spectacular and ideally placed in September for capturing images of the Milky Way galactic core over the coast. Techniques will include capturing and stacking night sky images, blending with foreground images in Photoshop and printing.

Your Leaders

Dr Jenni (Jen) Rogers

Jen is a seascape and astrophotographer, with a love of wild places. She likes to combine seascapes and astro work, and to take pictures of the Milky Way over the sea. She rarely has dry feet! She has been taking pictures for almost 30 years, since her parents bought her a second hand Praktica film camera for her 21st birthday. Jen loves taking images of the night sky, and uses an Ioptron tracker to enable longer exposures and reduce noise. In 2020 she was shortlisted for the Royal Museum Greenwich Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. She has also been a finalist in the Wanderlust Travel Photo of the Year competition and has been published in Outdoor Photography, Devon Life and the Exmoor National Park visitor guide.

Adrian Beasley

Adrian has been serious about shooting, processing and printing for over 25 years. He has been teaching photography for more than 20 years. Adrian is something of a nerd and loves all things technical which is why he transitioned to digital image processing back in 2000. In 2016 Adrian had great success at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition which prompted him to give up the day job and turn professional. These days Adrian divides his time between his own business and delivering training for a number of the UK’s most popular photographers, galleries and photo tour companies providing technical training in capture, processing and printing.

North Devon Coast Capture to Print

£995 (10% deposit)

Sold Out

4-Days, 3-Nights

Maximum group size 4

Based in Bideford, North Devon

The North Devon coastline is only 40 miles as the crow flies but is one of the most dramatic in the UK. Featuring sprawling sandy beaches and craggy coves; photographically there is something here for everyone. We have the UK’s first BioSphere reserve and the second largest dune system. The Eastern section touches Exmoor and transitions from rocky cliffs to expanses of sand. Across the Taw and Torridge estuaries we head towards the rugged cliffs of Hartland before turning south towards the North Cornwall coast and on to Bude.

You can photograph the ocean with big skies, tiny shells, crashing waves, rock details, surfers in the sunset, dune grasses drifting in the wind in colour and monochrome. Use creative camera techniques, multiple and long exposures to capture scudding clouds or movements of waves and long grasses.

This workshop combines shooting, editing and printing. We are a small group and will divide our time creatively depending on the conditions and needs of the group. The outline plan is for 2 full days shooting and 1 full day developing and printing. Our studio offers the very latest A3, A2 and A1 printers from Canon and Epson and fine art papers from Fotospeed. All of the studio facilities are available during the workshop and we have included a material budget for 1-day of printing which you can extend if you have specific needs.
