A reasonable level of fitness and agility is needed

Come and explore all the possibilities of winter seascapes and astrophotography on N Devon’s dramatic coast. We will take full advantage of the dramatic coastline and early sunset, shooting seascapes and long exposures into the blue hour from the cliffs and on the ledges at HQ and Welcombe. If we get a clear night we will shoot star trails and astro compositions with Orion looking SE from the cliffs. HQ is also ideally placed if we get a winter storm. We will make the most of the weather to ensure you go home with some dramatic shots and prints. A good level of agility is needed for this workshop which will involve walking 1-2 miles and going onto rock ledges.

Winter is a special time for seascape photography. We have low angled light all day,  and dawn, sunset and blue hour are all at reasonable times, allowing us to extend our shooting into the blue hour and beyond. We will shoot sunset and then take advantage of the twilight to explore blue hour photography and long exposures. We will be based at Hartland Quay and have the opportunity to explore the dramatic coastline around this location, including the ledges at Speke’s Mill Mouth and Welcombe, the beautiful waterfall at Speke’s, the cove and pinnacles below Hartland Quay hotel and Bude breakwater. If we have a clear night we can also shoot star trails and star constellations. If we get stormy weather then Hartland Quay and Bude breakwater are fabulous for capturing wave action.

A reasonable level of fitness and agility is needed for this workshop as we will be walking short distances with kit and clambering around on rocky beaches. This will be a capture to print workshop, and we will fit some processing sessions into the middle of the day and the evenings, arranged around the light.

Your Leaders

Dr Jenni (Jen) Rogers

Jen is a seascape and astrophotographer, with a love of wild places. She combines her love of astro with evening and blue hour light and rarely has dry feet! She has been taking pictures for almost 30 years, since her parents bought her a second hand Praktica film camera for her 21st birthday. In 2020 she was shortlisted for the Royal Museum Greenwich Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. She has also been a finalist in the Wanderlust Travel Photo of the Year competition and has been published in Outdoor Photography, Devon Life and the Exmoor National Park visitor guide.

Adrian Beasley

Adrian has been serious about shooting, processing and printing for over 25 years. He has been teaching photography for more than 20 years. Adrian is something of a nerd and loves all things technical which is why he transitioned to digital image processing back in 2000. In 2016 Adrian had great success at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition which prompted him to give up the day job and turn professional. These days Adrian divides his time between his own business and delivering training for a number of the UK’s most popular photographers, galleries and photo tour companies providing technical training in capture, processing and printing.

Location, Accommodation and timing

The workshop is based at Hartland Quay, North Devon. We will process and print the images at the hotel.

Workshop start 14:00 day 1 - We will meet you in the bar at the Hartland Quay Hotel.

Workshop ends 14:00 day 3 - We will be processing and printing on the final day up to lunch

Evening meals are included on a 2-course basis, excluding alcohol.

Pre-requisites:

• This workshop requires good mobility. We will be on rocky beaches as the light is fading.

• Good wellies and walking boots / wet weather gear.

• No previous experience is needed, training will be provided during the workshop.

• You need a camera with tripod and filters for long exposures.

• If we get good night visibility we can capture the stars. For that you will need an intervalometer and a fast wide-angle lens (e.g.14mm f2.8). We can provide more details if you let us know your camera make and model.

• You need to bring a computer for the editing and printing session. If you do not have a laptop, we may be able to loan you one but please check with us before booking.

• To help you sleep at night, please make sure you have suitable travel and equipment insurance.
