If you have ever wanted to try Astro photography but worry about all the techniques needed to capture, process and print your images, this workshop is for you! We have bought together all the elements needed to master and enjoy this genre of photography and located ourselves in one of the most spectacular UK locations. We will explain the technical elements that make Astro photography possible and help you to make pictures using your own equipment. You need only bring your existing camera and tripod.

 

We will be based at the magnificent Land’s End Hotel. Uniquely located on 200ft Granite Cliffs with unrivalled views to The Isles of Scilly and beyond. From this base we will combine Sunset, Astro and Star-trail photography over two nights in several locations. In addition, you will be able to process your images from the first day and produce several A3 prints on Fine Art papers to take away. Using the results of day one will help you improve your results for our second night of shooting.

 

The landscape in reach of our base is world class and ideally placed in May for capturing images of the Milky Way galactic core over the coast. Techniques will include capturing and stacking night sky images, blending with foreground images in Photoshop and preparation for printing and finally printing your images on a selection of fine art A3 papers.

 

A note about the Weather!

We will do our best to deliver you a great Astro workshop but we cannot control the weather! If we believe it will not be possible to shoot the stars on a specific night, we will offer alternative options and take advantage of the world class coastal landscapes surrounding our base. You have two experienced photographers and first class processing and printing facilities at your disposal so we should have a great time whatever the weather.

Dr Jen Rogers

Jen is a seascape and astro-photographer, with a love of wild places. She likes to combine seascapes and astro work, and take pictures of the Milky Way over the sea. She has been taking pictures for almost 30 years. Jen loves taking images of the night sky, and uses an Ioptron tracker to enable longer exposures and reduce noise. In 2020 she was shortlisted for the Royal Museum Greenwich Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition and in 2021 one of her night images has been shortlisted for a prestigious Landscape Photography competition. She has also been a finalist in the Wanderlust Travel Photo of the Year competition and has been published in Outdoor Photography, Devon Life and the Exmoor National Park visitor guide.

Adrian Beasley

Adrian has been serious about shooting, processing and printing for over 25 years. He has been teaching photography for more than 20 years. Adrian is something of a nerd and loves all things technical which is why he transitioned to digital image processing back in 2000. In 2016 Adrian had great success at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition which prompted him to give up the day job and turn professional. These days Adrian divides his time between his own business and delivering training for a number of the UK’s most popular photographers, galleries and photo tour companies providing technical training in capture, processing and printing.

Location and Accommodation

The workshop cost includes single occupancy B&B accommodation for two nights at the Land’s End Hotel. You will be responsible for lunch and evening meals.

Arrival and Departure

We will meet you at 16:30 Friday 20th May in the bar of the Land’s End Hotel. We will introduce the workshop, eat and then head out for our first evening. The workshop ends at 13:00 on Sunday the 22nd May.

You may consider using the train to Penzance as an alternative to a car. The hotel is a 10 mile taxi ride from the station. If you do decide to use the train, let us know your timing, we may be able to collect and drop off.

 

Meals

Breakfast is included every day. You will be responsible for your lunch and evening meals.

Transport

During the workshop we will have two vehicles available to us, so you will not need to use your car during the workshop.

 

Pre-requisites:​

• No previous experience of Astro photography is needed, training will be provided during the workshop.

• DSLR with tripod and cable release. Please ask for more details if you are unsure.

• You need to bring a computer for the editing and printing session. You may bring your desktop if you do not have a laptop. We may be able to loan you a laptop if you are unable to bring your own but please check before booking.

• You will need an average level of fitness for the location elements. If you have issues with mobility, please speak to us before booking and we can advise if the workshop is suitable for you.

• For your peace of mind, please make sure you have suitable travel and equipment insurance. Make sure you policy covers Covid related costs.

Booking and Cancellation Policy for Residentials: 

We require a 10% deposit when you book to secure your place, final balance will be due 4-weeks before the start of the workshop. If you cancel at any time, please understand that I may need to retain some of your monies to cover incurred costs that I cannot recover, unless I am able to re-sell your place. In general, if I am able to re-sell the place, I will refund you so please contact me as quickly as possible.
