25th - 29th April 2024

5-days, 5 nights, B&B single room in 5* Hotel

Tutors: 2, Max Clients: 6

Introduction

Gozo is a small, friendly island just a short ferry trip north from its larger neighbour – Malta and 20 miles south of Sicily. There are only a few sandy beaches so it isn’t a destination for the 18-30’s crowd. Instead, you will find a quiet, beautiful island that is home to the worlds oldest free standing structure, 5,500 years old. The island has a dominant warm honey colour coming from the locally mined limestone which is beautifully exaggerated by the rising and setting sun.

Our visit will give you an opportunity to explore a varied selection of locations offering a mix of photographic opportunities that can work in colour or black & white. From the beautiful and ancient salt pans in the north to the intriguing twists and turns of the Citadel and narrow streets in the capital, Il-Rabat (Victoria). There will also be an opportunity to visit and photograph a unique Museum of Toys owned by Clea’s mother for more than 30 years!

We plan to be out shooting for 3.5 days and spend 1.5 days working on images and books. We will bring a variety of portable printers with us, and the tools and materials needed to create a permanent and unique record of your travels in a simple book form.

Location, Accommodation and Transport

We will be staying at the Kempinski Hotel, San Lawrenz – a five-star hotel with extensive facilities. We will have transport available during the stay. See below for details on arrival and departure info.

Start and End timing

We will meet for introductions at 5pm on Thursday 25th April and the workshop will finish at 5pm on 29th April. We have booked rooms for 5 nights, which includes our last teaching day (29th) so you can relax on the last day. We will be just out of season so the hotel will be able to accommodate you if you decide to extend your stay.

Accessibility

We will use a mini bus to reach our main locations but there is walking needed to explore. Some of the ground around the salt pans can be uneven and slippery in places.  One day will be spent walking around Victoria and the Citadel, so this workshop wouldn’t suit clients who tire quickly or need assistance walking. Please ask before booking if you are not sure.

Meals

You will be staying at the hotel on a B&B basis, other meals at your expense. The hotel has a restaurant and café.  We will also use a range of local restaurants which are modestly priced.

Getting to the Hotel

You will fly into Malta International Airport in the south. From there, the simplest option is a bus to the ferry port then a taxi from Gozo port to the hotel.

If you use our recommended flights, we will provide airport collection and drop-off. If you use other flights, there are plenty of taxi and public transport options that operate 24hrs a day, the ferry runs continuously through the night and only takes 25 minutes to cross.

Pre-requisites:

  • No previous experience is needed, especially for the editing, printing and book making elements. Training and tools will be provided during the workshop.

  • You need to bring a computer for the editing and session. If you do not have a suitable computer, we may be able to loan one but please check with us before booking.
