This workshop is an exciting combination of image capture and hand-made book creation in the lovely coastal town of Instow. At the end of this workshop you will take away a beautiful, professional panoramic drum-leaf book with a title foiled onto the cover.

What is a drum-leaf book?

A drum-leaf book is a format that results in every page being layflat. The pages are "drummed" together. That means there is no gutter and you can spread your images across the centre without losing any of the image. This is an ideal format for photo books. Take a careful look at the video above and you can see how the images flow across the centre without interruption.

Other features of the book we will make

Your book will have hard covers (paper or cloth covered), end papers and a cloth spine. Each page is A4 landscape so the book is double A4 landscape wide when opend out. Your book will have 16 sides and you can choose to use any of them (or all of them!) as double page spreads. Check the video above as our example is made exactly the same way. For the first time we are including the ability to add a foiled title to your book in a range of colours to match your chosen cover material. This really elevates the book to a new level.

I have never made a book before, will this workshop suit me?

YES! Over the past 3 years Clea has been teaching people to make these books who have never made a hand made book before. We only use simple tools so it is something you can repeat when you get home. Clea provides a comprehensive set of instructions and material lists with links.

(The only part that requires a specialist tool is the foiling on the cover. There are other ways to title your books at home but foiling does require special equipment)

Do I have to make a panoramic book?

We will all make the same format of book but the content can be entirely your own design. You do not have to have panoramic images or spread images across the page but you can if you want. Your book could simply use each side for a conventional landscape image. You can also have text in your book.

What software do I need?

Lightroom is all you need.

You can select and edit your images in Lightroom. Adrian will demonstrate how to create your book pages using Lightroom. If you use Photoshop, Affinity Publisher or Adobe InDesign, by all means use them and Adrian and Clea will help you set up print templates for our chosen design.

Workshop schedule

Arrival day will involve introductions and a run through of the ittenary and sharing of example books. We will then walk out to explore the location further without our cameras so we can properly understand the range of photographic opportunities that our location provides. We will return to the hotel for dinner.

Day 2 is all about shooting. Our day-1 orientation walk will have highlighted locations and shots you may want to take, so you can plan your day. Clea and I will check-in with you to provide feedback and ideas throughout the day. You can catch up with us over lunch or hunker down and focus on your shooting.

In the event that the weather is against us it makes sense to bring a back-up set of images that you could use for the book making part. You could bring images that would suit the panoramic format of the book.

Day 3 is about shortlisting, selection, editing and printing the book pages. We will support you through a process of selecting your final images, editing them for print and finally Adrian will print your pages ready for the book.

Day 4 is all about making the book. Clea will introduce the process, tools and materials. You will choose your cover, spine and end papers. Then book making will commence! There are breaks and lunch through the day and we expect to finish by 5pm. It is unlikley that we will finish early so please take that into account for your travel plans.
