Photography & Handmade Book Workshop at Northam Burrows, North Devon

Introduction
Back in 2022 we chose Northam Burrows for our very first Image and Word book making workshop. Since then we have travelled far and wide across the country exploring beautiful locations whose common thread is their beauty and depth allowing many different interpretations. We decided it was time to return to this wonderful enclave of the North Devon coastline, Northam Burrows, Country Park. We hope you can join us!
The Image and Word format
We will explore one location as the source for a focused collection of related images to be used in a hand-made book which you will construct on the final day. You will be encouraged to explore a deeper side to your photography, taking the opportunity to incorporate images and words into your book if you wish (although we understand that you may wish the images to speak for themselves!) We will support you in the process of selection, sequencing, editing and layout of your images for print. All instruction, materials and tools are provided. No prior experience of book making is needed.
Details
Photography is experiential, it is deeply personal and expressive of a moment in time.
This is a unique creative photography experience, led by Paul Sanders, Adrian Beasley and Clea Beasley. You will be encouraged to explore a deeper side to your own photography and taught to create a stunning, hand-crafted book to capture the essence of your time in our location – Northam Burrows. During the week, there will also be opportunities to look at a range of book forms and to make a simpler book in a form that you can easily replicate at home using minimal tools and materials.
We will be based in this location for the whole of our workshop. This will give us time to explore and absorb the area as we work towards producing a short series of images that truly reflect your feelings and experience of this world class coastal location.
Northam Burrows has an intriguing mix of subjects. A two-mile-long sandy beach is backed by a "pebble ridge" of huge smooth boulders. The wind-swept dunes with dilapidated fences and grasses protect an undulating common land that hides a fascinating salt marsh. Facing to the Atlantic we are treated to wide-open skies and often, spectacular sunsets.

We will encourage you to work mindfully as you investigate and photograph the location. Mindfulness is essentially working with the present moment, losing attachment to preconceived ideas and working with and accepting what is available.
As we progress, we hope that you will be inspired to make notes of your thoughts about the images you receive from the location, perhaps they may be just a list, a poem or a quote, maybe the words from a song keep floating into your awareness, all of these things along with the rest of your senses build up the experience and can be worked into the images you are making and may be incorporated in the book that you make.
Photographs aren’t real until they are printed, and there is no better way of reconnecting with the moment you released the shutter than to hold your images in your hand, beautifully printed. We will help you to select and collate your images and edit them ready for printing to form the pages of your book.

On the final day, we will teach you how to bring together printed pages into a beautiful handmade book, making a leporello style book complete with end papers and cloth binding with an inset title. All three of your leaders have many years of experience between them of making handmade books and will be on hand to guide you.
