Shoot and make a unique book on the wild Hartland coast in the depths of winter. Stay right on the coast to experience the power of the sea, the wind and the cliffs. Hartland is one of the most exciting stretches of the South West Coast Path drawing walkers and photographers alike. The Wreckers Coast at Hartland mixes intimate details of lichen covered rocks, wind carved grasses and plant life with its big skies, towering cliffs, boulder strewn beaches, waterfalls, huge geological folded cliffs and beaches with rocky finger structures heading into the sea.

Our base is perfectly placed to manage the weather conditions if it becomes poor, allowing us to shoot between squalls. We will walk out to the photo locations from our base; there will be no driving. We will have editing and printing facilities on hand so we can flex between shooting, editing and printing. On the final day you will make a book of images shot on location.

Clea started to work with me in 2022. We decided to combine her knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for making handmade books with my passion for photography and printing. Since then we have created more and more capture to book workshops in the UK and abroad, where you return home with a beautiful and unique book as well as images for further development and printing.

Over the past 3 years we have developed many different book forms but for me the pinnacle is the drum leaf. This book form offers lay-flat pages which can be used to present your images in flexible ways and is especially suited to double page spreads.

For this workshop, you will make our largest handmade book to date, an A4 book that opens to A3 lay-flat landscape pages. This is an impressive book and you will finish it off by foiling your title onto the spine. How you use the lay-flat pages is up to you but we will provide examples and guidance. You don't need any prior experience of editing, printing or book making, we will help you through the steps and provide you with comprehensive instruction so you can make your second book at home.

The workshop is based at Hartland Quay in North Devon. You will be staying at the Hartland Quay Hotel in a double en-suite room on a single occupancy basis. Once there, we will not use transport.
