Leader: Adrian Beasley

Exclusive Small Group size: Max 4

Venice is such a rich visual feast that it would be easy to shoot it just one way, in colour. However, with this workshop we will focus on seeing and capturing this magical place in Black & White. We will look for the light, shade, mood, texture, line and simplicity. Colour photography can often be completely realised in camera, while black & white images lend themselves to editing, allowing a wide range of interpretations. For that reason, this workshop includes dedicated time in the field and in our workspace for editing AND printing. You won't go home with a card full of un-edited images, you will take some prints, edited pictures, workflows, tips and ideas from Adrian, a self-confessed B&W junkie!

With a small group, we can immerse ourselves in a monochrome world. Adrian will demonstrate editing techniques on-the-hoof using the latest mobile editing tools. He will also have his laptop available all day while we are shooting so that we can explore how images can be created in realtime. With this immediate feedback you will quickly learn to see image opportunities and take them before they are lost. At our hotel, we have a space to use our Laptops, iPads or phones to realise our visions and to print them onto Fine Art papers.

Black & white shooting is a way to simplify an image, removing the complexity of colour. Combining black & white with long exposure allows us to reduce complexity even more, especially where water or moving subjects form part of an image. The abundance of canals and waterways have created iconic locations that work especially well for long exposure photography. There are also many opportunities where the location is not important but a beautiful image can be created. We will help you explore those iconic places but also the lesser trodden areas where you can create unique images and express your personal style. We will also experiment shooting with a short exposure, allowing some movement.

We will have printing facilities and a space to work, allowing us to edit and print our images. This feedback process, while in the place, allows us to see what is working and what is not. We can then revisit or re-shoot a location, digging deeper or correcting any issues we discover in our prints.

Join this small group workshop and take your black & white photography to the next level.
