The Seaside Series

We have created a series of workshops with a common theme and a common outcome. You can join us on one or more of these workshops and enjoy creating your unique response to these wonderful locations in the form of stab bound books.

The Great British Seaside has been a popular holiday destination for generations of people during the summer months, whatever the weather. Out of season, these familiar resorts provide a treasure trove of evocative scenes and fascinating details.

In this sequence of 3 workshops, Paul, Adrian and Clea will support you in seeking out and capturing the shabby, jaded beauty of each of the destinations. After gathering words and images to reflect your authentic experience of the location, we will work together to create pages to fill stab bound books. In the final workshop of this series, we will also teach you to make a simple box style container for your book/books. You can choose whether to join one, two or all three of the workshops in this series.

All materials needed for book and box making will be provided along with use of the necessary tools and equipment. Clea will also send you comprehensive set of written instructions and a list of suppliers after you attend the workshop(s).

Part 3 Blackpool

From Lincolnshire we travel west to Lancashire for the third stop of our seaside series, where Blackpool sits on the edge of the Irish Sea. Blackpool has an impressive 7-mile-long sandy beach which has been attracting tourists since the mid 1800s. The first stagecoach route between Manchester and Blackpool began in 1781 leading to the transformation of Blackpool from a tiny hamlet with a population of just 500 people to a town of over 2500 people by 1851 and approximately 150,000 residents at the last census.

Like many of our other seaside resorts, the arrival of the railway in the 1840s led to a massive boost in tourism and further increases in population. One of the town’s most famous landmarks is Blackpool Tower which was built in 1894 and was the tallest building in the British Empire at that time. Blackpool is of course also famed for its illuminations.  The town also has the only first-generation tramway remaining in the UK.

Blackpool is such an iconic seaside destination that it is the ideal place to complete our seaside series. With its range of locations, attractions and classic holiday resort features, Blackpool will provide plenty of opportunities to capture the essence of the Great British Seaside.
